Collingwood demands England resurgence

England batsman Paul Collingwood is determined to emerge from a winter of disappointment and start building towards the 2009 Ashes series.

Collingwood, 30, wants to build on the work of former coach Duncan Fletcher and, under new coach Peter Moores, look towards the home series against Australia in two years time and banish the memories of the 5-0 whitewash down under.

"Our Test form in the last four or five years has been good, obviously the 5-0 defeat to the Aussies was a huge disappointment but in general the form has been good and we want to get back to those winning ways," said Collingwood on BBC Five Live's Sportsweek. "We want to keep improving and get better than we've been in the last four years."

Moores' reign looks likely to start without Michael Vaughan as captain after the opener suffered a broken finger playing for Yorkshire.

Andrew Strauss has been tipped to deputise when the first Test against West Indies starts later this month.

"It's bad timing again," Collingwood added. "I feel so sorry for Michael after so much hard work getting fit with his knee, then he gets a bit of bad luck.

"It's would have been ideal for Peter Moores to start with Vaughany but that sort of thing happens in sport. Straussy is the favourite (to deputise), he's done it before last year against Pakistan in place of Andrew Flintoff."

Collingwood met with Moores last week for a training session at Loughborough and the Durham batsman was impressed with the new coach.

"He's very confident and very ambitious, which is important," he added. "We all look forward to working with him."
