Collingwood restores England pride
16 January 2008
Humiliated in the opening two matches, Collingwood typified England's determination not to lose the series in successive games and delivered a defiant performance at Eden Gardens.
Chasing a revised target of 229 in 47 overs after New Zealand posted a competitive 234 for nine, Ian Bell top-scored with 73 before Collingwood raced to an unbeaten 70 off 50 balls.
Bell and Kevin Pietersen (41) helped the tourists recover from losing both openers with a 120-run stand.
But after Bell scored his first one-day half-century in 12 innings, both he and Pietersen fell to New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori in successive overs to once again put the outcome in doubt.
However, Collingwood smashed six fours and three sixes to help England secure the win with three overs remaining.
Earlier in the day, Jacob Oram scored 88 off 91 balls but England produced a much-improved bowling performance.
Stuart Broad was the pick of the attack, finishing with three for 32, while Collingwood claimed three for 43.
