Having begun the fourth day 240 runs behind, England were in profit by four when the new ball found its way off Vaughan's thigh pad on to the stumps to spark a collapse of seven wickets for 68 runs - and leaving India needing just 63 runs for victory.
"If we were going to get ourselves out of the hole we and to win all three sessions," said Collingwood. "But a little bit of bad luck went against us."
He added: "It wasn't too easy out there but Michael had everything under control. He was positive and could easily gone on and got a really big one.
"He was lining the ball up superbly well - give the Indian bowlers a lot of credit because they were swinging the ball both ways - and had everything under control.
"He was obviously in the zone; it was exceptional; it was always going to take a really good 'jaffa' of a ball or some bad luck to get him out.
"The wicket wasn't that flat, it was zipping around a bit and it was a magnificent innings, simple as that."
England took 13 runs off the first over with the new ball to haul the scores level and appeared on course to force the contest deep into the fifth day.
Collingwood added: "We didn't want to go overboard but we certainly talked about putting them under pressure and there were signs of it getting quieter and quieter in the field.
"We were putting them under the pump a little bit. Another hour or so of myself and Michael would have really finished off a great day for England because we were fighting back hard."
