Collingwood stars for England

Paul Collingwood fought through a migraine to deliver with bat and ball and keep England in contention for their first major victory of the winter in Friday's one-day international against West Indies.

England's former one-day captain hit a determined 69 off 77 balls to help England reach a competitive 270 for seven in the opening match of the one-day series, despite suffering from blurred vision during the later stages of his innings.

Forced to miss the first eight overs of the West Indies reply because of his condition, Collingwood then returned to dismiss Ramnaresh Sarwan as the home side reached 143 for two after 31 overs.

Collingwood had responded to new captain Andrew Strauss' call for the senior players to stand up and deliver after 13 international matches this winter without success.

He steadied the innings after England lost Strauss, who was playing his first one-day international for two years, and Kevin Pietersen inside the first 13 overs after deciding to bat first.

His vast experience was also called upon when England lost two wickets in three balls during the batting power play before holing out to mid-wicket in the search for quick runs in the final overs.

West Indies made a stuttering start to their reply with Gayle, playing for the first time since the final Test in Trinidad, falling lbw in the third over to a full-length delivery from Broad.

But opener Lendl Simmons teamed up with Ramnaresh Sarwan in a 107-run partnership until Collingwood struck to break the partnership, having Sarwan caught at short mid-wicket for 57.
