Colly could be Test skipper - Vaughan
15 January 2007
Current incumbent Vaughan believes England's one-day captain has all the right credentials to slip seamlessly into the same role in five-day cricket, as and when required.
"I said at the time when I handed it [the one-day captaincy] on, if 'Colly' comes in and does a great job there might be a stage when he does both," Vaughan told The Independent. "I'm sure that stage will come eventually. Whether it's in a month, whether it's in a year, in two years, who knows?"
Collingwood, two years younger than Vaughan, took over the limited-overs reins after England's disappointing World Cup campaign earlier this year - and has so far overseen the team in three series, as well as the inaugural World Twenty20.
He followed defeat against the West Indies with victories against India and, most recently, in Sri Lanka last month.
Vaughan has seen enough to be confident Collingwood has the stature to take charge of the Test team too.
"I really believe he is going to make a good captain, I really do," he added. "He can switch to Test captain. If you can do one you can do both.
"If in four or six weeks someone says the captaincy of the team should go to Colly, that it is in the best interests of the team that we have one and Colly leads both sides then that's okay with me.
"That's the way it is going to go eventually.
"It's the best job in the world, and I love every single minute of it. I hope I can take us on and on. But these things come to an end, and it's not something I worry about. That's life."
