The selection panel will almost certainly name all-rounder Collingwood as the successor to Michael Vaughan.
Collingwood's long-term goals will be to mould a team capable of competing at next year's ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the 2011 World Cup.
Leicestershire wicketkeeper Paul Nixon, who played alongside him during last winter's one-day series in Australia and the World Cup, said: "Paul Collingwood would do a good job.
"He needs one or two good senior pros around him because it is a learning experience and you just don't become a brilliant captain straight away - it takes time.
"The great thing is you are working with the cream of the crop, with good beliefs and good ideas and they can drip-feed that through to the captain."
