Confusion over Pietersen and Moores

Confusion reigned on Wednesday over the positions of England captain Kevin Pietersen and coach Peter Moores.

Reports in the morning suggested both men had left their posts following the breakdown of their working relationship but the England and Wales Cricket Board claim to have no knowledge of either doing so.

Pietersen is understood to have told his employers he was not prepared to tour the West Indies later this month under the present management structure.

Initial media reports said that Pietersen, 28, had resigned as captain five months into his tenure. Those claims were quickly followed by reports elsewhere that Moores had departed.

The public falling out between the pair meant a decision on their futures was expected by the end of this week.

Many eminent former England players felt Pietersen, not back from holiday until Thursday, would win the stand-off.

The ECB board discussed the situation last night after Hugh Morris, managing director of England cricket, liaised with both men involved in the spat and other figures within the international set-up, and reported his findings.

News of a rift between Pietersen and Moores became public on New Year's Eve and the ECB have been forced to carry out their inquest into the relationship breakdown under great scrutiny.
