Contador ahead as Astarloza takes stage

Mikel Astarloza timed his finish to perfection to win stage 16 of the Tour de France as fellow Spaniard Alberto Contador consolidated his position at the top of the general classification.

Astarloza, who rides for Euskaltel Euskadi, raced clear of a four-man leading group with two kilometres remaining to finish the 159km trek from Martigny to Bourg St Maurice six seconds clear of Sandy Casar and Pierrick Fedrigo.

There is no change at the top of the overall standings, with Lance Armstrong recovering well on the climb up the Col du Petit St Bernard, the day's second steep climb in the Alps, to finish with his fellow yellow-jersey contenders 59 seconds behind Astarloza.

Armstrong remains second behind Contador, while Britain's Bradley Wiggins finished alongside Astana's heavyweight duo to stay third in the GC.
