Cook sees the bigger picture

England batsman Alastair Cook is determined not to let the prospect of winning £500,000 detract from the "bigger challenges" ahead.

Cook is a member of the England squad due to take on the Stanford Superstars in the lucrative '20/20 for 20' challenge in Antigua on November 1. But England also have tours to India and West Indies this winter and then face Sri Lanka and the World Twenty20 next summer before an Ashes series against Australia.

And Cook, 23, is determined to excel in those series saying: "There are far bigger challenges in going to India and in playing Australia but it is quite an exciting week because we are stepping a bit into the unknown."

He added: "The Stanford is a very unique game, obviously the first of a new brand of Twenty20 with a huge amount of money involved. Hopefully it will get cricket on the front pages.

"No-one has ever played for half a million pounds each, so it is a very strange game we are going to be playing.

"The money makes it exciting to watch and it will be fantastic to win but there are far more important things in terms of the cricket we have got to play."

Doubt has been cast over whether the Stanford match will take place due to a sponsorship row between the West Indies Cricket Board and their principal backers Digicel.

Digicel have argued that the Stanford Superstars are the West Indies side in all but name and therefore they should have sponsorship rights. The matter was taken to the High Court in London and the WICB on Tuesday revealed they had lost.

The WICB must now withdraw their sanction for the match - which would probably mean England pulling out - or reach a compromise with Digicel.

"There is nothing we can do but I am pretty sure it will be resolved," said Cook. "We are not to sure what is happening and are watching news updates but hopefully it will go ahead and cricket will be taken into new areas."
