Cotterill eager to open account

Young striker David Cotterill believes he is on the verge of promotion with his club and a bright new future with Wales.

The 21-year-old Sheffield United attacker fell out of favour with Wales boss John Toshack but has forced his way into the Blades' promotion push while Toshack has finally rewarded him for his patience.

Now Cotterill could well find himself involved in the two World Cup qualifiers with Finland on Saturday and Germany next Wednesday and said: "I have waited a long time for a first international goal and it would be nice to get off the mark now, if I am selected or if I come into the game off the bench. I want to play my part in making sure we get the result we want."

He added: "There is a bit of competition for the second striker's role against Finland because a lot of the lads are playing week in and week out now, including me.

"I am not the only one in the squad who thinks he should play, but whatever the manager decides I am sure his decision will be right for the team.

"My confidence is the highest it has been for a long time because it is the first time I have had a run of games at Sheffield United. Hopefully I can keep building on that.

"I started the season slowly but I have managed to get myself back in the team now and hopefully I will stay in there. We are going well at the moment and believe we can get promotion."
