Creditable show from teenage Keatings

British gymnast Dan Keatings finished a creditable 20th in the men's individual all-around final at the National Indoor Stadium in Beijing.

However, the 18-year-old from Corby is a prospect for London 2012 and was never expected to challenge for the medals.

Keatings began well with a solid vault which earned him a score of 15.8 and put him third overall after the first rotation in the 24-man event.

However, that position was skewed somewhat as scores for vaults are nearly always higher than the other disciplines.

The Huntingdon Olympic Club athlete made a slight mistake on the parallel bars but posted 14.425 for 30.225 and 15th place after the second round.

On the horizontal bar he scored 14.225 and dropped to 20th on 44.450 at the halfway stage, while on the floor the 2007 all-around European junior champion had a slight stumble on his finish, earning 14.850 for a total of 59.3 and 21st.

The penultimate discipline was the pommel horse - Keating's strongest - and he scored well (15.7) to reach 75 points and 17th place.

Unfortunately on the rings the teenager, who suffered three stress fractures to his spine after representing Scotland at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, fell on his dismount.

He was marked down to 14 but that gave him a total of 89, just beating his score in qualifying at the weekend, which was 88.95.

The gold medal was won by China's world champion Yang Wei, runner-up in Sydney eight years ago, with a total of 94.575.
