Crouch stars as England ease to win

Peter Crouch stepped up his claims to play a leading role for England under Fabio Capello with two goals in the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Belarus at Wembley.

The Tottenham striker took advantage of the absence of Wayne Rooney and Emile Heskey to take his tally to 16 goals in 17 starts for his country.

Shaun Wright-Phillips was also on target as England ended Group Six with nine wins from 10 matches.

Crouch did his hopes of making Fabio Capello's World Cup squad no harm when, after four minutes, he slid home a cross from the energetic Gabriel Agbonlahor after a precise through ball from former Aston Villa team-mate Gareth Barry.

Belarus failed to put up much of a fight but they did manage an effort just before the break when Sergei Kornilenko was off target from close range.

England could have doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half when Frank Lampard's free-kick was pushed over the bar by Yuri Zhevnov.

To the delight of the Wembley crowd David Beckham was introduced to the action after 57 minutes and just two minutes later he was involved in England extending their lead.

He played a short corner to Wright-Phillips - who drilled a shot goalbound and saw the ball squirm under Zhevnov, who should have done better.

Crouch picked up his second of the game with 16 minutes to play when he pounced on an error by Zhevnov. The Belarus stopper fumbled a shot from substitute Carlton Cole and Crouch was on hand to slot the ball home and ensure England finish their qualifying campaign with a win.
