Cuellar lands top SPL award

Rangers defender Carlos Cuellar has been rewarded for a magnificent debut campaign in Scotland by landing the Clydesdale Bank Premier League's Player of the Season award.

The 26-year-old Spanish centre-back has been outstanding at the heart of the Rangers rearguard since signing from Osasuna last summer.

His club boss Walter Smith was also honoured, receiving manager of the year honours at the awards ceremony held at Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

Smith has already steered the club to the CIS Insurance Cup trophy and his Rangers side remain on course for SPL, Scottish Cup and UEFA Cup titles.

Celtic's Aiden McGeady was named young player of the year, ensuring it would not be a Rangers clean sweep of the top awards.

Cuellar's honour came as no surprise, and he could follow it up by landing the PFA Scotland award on Sunday, and the Scottish Football Writers' Association prize next month.

Smith, 60, has revived Rangers' fortunes since returning for a second spell in charge of Rangers in January 2007.

His team are on course to end Celtic's reign as Scottish champions after two league titles in succession for Gordon Strachan's side.

Rangers currently hold a four-point lead over their Glasgow rivals in the SPL and have two games in hand, with their next match a tough Old Firm clash against Celtic at Parkhead on Wednesday.

McGeady has become a key figure in the Celtic side this season, usurping Shunsuke Nakamura as Gordon Strachan's most effective midfield player.
