Cunningham cleared for cup semi
25 January 2007
The veteran number nine was cleared to play for the holders in Saturday's Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final against Bradford at Huddersfield's Galpharm Stadium, despite being found guilty of misconduct.
Cunningham, placed on report for an alleged swinging arm on Wigan full-back Pat Richards during Saints' 19-12 Super League victory on Friday, escaped with a £300 fine when he appeared before the Rugby Football League's disciplinary committee.
The news will come as a big relief for the cup holders as well as Cunningham, who will make his 400th appearance for the club.
Cunningham, who has never been sent off and has only ever been sin-binned once during his 12 years as a professional, will captain St Helens on Saturday, despite the return of scrum-half Sean Long.
Long played as a substitute against Wigan - only his second appearance in 10 weeks because of a nagging calf injury - and will start against the Bulls after experiencing no adverse reaction.
Cunningham has led the team for the last two months in the absence of both skipper Paul Sculthorpe and vice-captain Long.
Coach Daniel Anderson said: "I'm more than comfortable with leaving it in his hands. I'll have a chat with both players but the likelihood is Keiron will remain captain."
