The 23-year-old suffered the injury during a training match against New Zealand on Monday in Hong Kong when she twisted her ankle and left the pitch in considerable pain.
Initial fears were that it would rule her out of the Olympics with coach Danny Kerry comparing her potential absence to "losing Wayne Rooney just before a tournament".
A scan on Tuesday evening revealed Danson has suffered a Grade One ligament strain and while not as serious first thought, she still faces up to a 10-day recovery period, meaning it is touch and go whether the Slough player will be ready in time to face the reigning Olympic Champions.
"Team GB is pleased to report that women's hockey player Alex Danson is making good progress," a team statement read.
"A scan revealed a Grade One ligament strain to her right ankle, which will require seven to 10 days recovery time. This is the best possible outcome given the circumstances.
"With the first match now 11 days away, Alex will continue treatment here in Macau and remain part of the women's hockey squad. Alex is aware that she will be subject to a final fitness test."
