Howell, who has been battling back and wrist injuries this summer, carved his opening drive into a greenside bunker on the short 16th.
The Swindon golfer bogeyed the hole, did the same on the 463-yard second after pushing his tee shot into more sand and then hit even bigger trouble at the next.
This time Howell was in a bunker left of the fairway and, after thinking long and hard about whether to try for the green over Jockie's Burn, decided to lay up and went too far into yet another bunker.
The hole was only about 30 yards away, but he came out short into the burn and after taking a penalty drop did well to limit the damage to a double bogey six with a nine-foot putt.
At that point Howell looked to the skies and smiled. He was already six adrift of playing partner and early leader KJ Choi.
The Korean had holed from 22 and 10 feet on the first and third and then birdied the 412-yard fourth as well, but this time Howell managed to match him and so improved to three over.
It was still a long way back into contention, though.
