Kevin Davies hauled Bolton level in the 54th minute by heading home a free-kick from Idan Tal.
Lubomir Michalik had put Bolton in front in the first half, but a header from Salomon Kalou and an own goal by Jussi Jaaskelainen gave Chelsea the lead at the interval.
Bolton took a shock lead in the 19th minute. Andranik Teymourian's free-kick caused panic in the Chelsea defence and Michalik fired past Petr Cech.
But the Blues levelled two minutes later when Kalou glanced the ball beyond the stranded Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Chelsea were rocked in the 29th minute, though, by the loss of defender Ricardo Carvalho, who appeared to suffer a recurrence of his hamstring injury.
Chelsea should have gone in front on the half-hour, but a stunning volley from Andriy Shevchenko was tipped over by Jaaskelainen and then Michael Essien fired wide from Frank Lampard's corner.
The home side were now in total control and it was only a matter of time before the second goal arrived.
It came via the foot of Jaaskelainen in the 33rd minute. Kalou rose highest to meet Lampard's corner at the far post and when his header came down off the bar, it went into the net off the Bolton goalkeeper.
But in the 54th minute Bolton were level through Davies, who headed home Tal's free-kick on the edge of the six-yard box with Petr Cech stranded.
