Davies hoping for Jones deal

Derby manager Billy Davies is hoping to conclude a deal for long-time target Kenwyne Jones over the next couple of days.

The Rams have already had two bids rejected by Southampton for the 22-year-old striker, including a club record £5million offer last Monday.

"We all know a lot more firepower is required at Derby County, and we're working very hard to do that," said Davies. "That includes Kenwyne Jones. We're obviously in discussions, and along with a number of other targets, we're hoping we can conclude some business over the next couple of days."

He added: "We went back in on Friday to move the discussions forward, so I'm hoping over the course of the next couple of days we've some good news to tell you."

Another Southampton player in midfielder Jhon Viafara has been linked with a move to Pride Park, noted by Davies for his displays in last season's play-off semi-final.

"He is a very good player," added Davies, who was a little coy when asked if he would like to see the Colombian in a Derby shirt.

"Well, I didn't like to see him in a Southampton shirt when he played against us in the play-off semi-final. He did very well against us, caused us a lot of problems with his pace and power, and of course he scored some good goals into the bargain. So I do have bad memories of that lad."

With United States midfielder Benny Feilhaber and Finland winger Mika Vayrynen due to complete moves from SV Hamburg and PSV Eindhoven, it could be a busy week for Davies.

The Scot also remains hopeful of holding on to young star Giles Barnes following his performances for the Rams last season. The 19-year-old is currently recovering from a fractured metatarsal, but has attracted a lot of interest, notably from West Ham.

"There has been an improved offer made for Giles, not only from West Ham, but also a number of other clubs," confirmed Davies. "But their valuation is miles away from where we would consider anything taking place, so as far as I'm concerned, roll on the end of August."
