Davies urges truce in coaching row

Former executive director of the Football Association David Davies has urged both Trevor Brooking and Brian Mawhinney to put aside their differences and get down to the crucial task of improving youth coaching standards in England.

The pair have been at the centre of a rift regarding youth development programmes but Davies believes the feud must stop now for the sake of England's rising stars.

"I hope and pray that they will sort everything out," Davies told PA Sport. "This is a fundamental issue about the way we develop young players. It`s one of the most important things in the future of the game."

He added: "The thing is that sometimes people talk as though they they are not the same side.

"Surely we would assume that everyone in English football is on the same side in developing talent and if they are not then they should be.

"One of the failures of my time within football was that it proved impossible to get people from all sectors of the game to agree on their priorities."

FA board member Dave Henson on Friday claimed Brooking has not had the full support since he took over his role three years ago.

"In the last few years there has never been any love lost between Sir Trevor and the professional game, and by that I mean the Football League and the Premier League," said Henson.

"They have never fully backed Trevor. Trevor has had a difficult time because he has not always had their backing. Not everyone has been on board with him.

"The point is this makes it quite difficult to overcome what has been said in the last few days."
