Davis vows to fight on

Steve Davis is "hanging on for grim death" to his playing career but has vowed not to quit after a hat-trick of first-round exits from the Betfred.com World Championship.

The 51-year-old has developed a resistance to the pain of losing, and was in chirpy mood after his 10-2 defeat to Australian Neil Robertson on Wednesday, which followed opening defeats to John Parrott and Stuart Bingham in the past two seasons.

Davis cannot see any point in retiring, but knows there is no guarantee he will ever play again at the Crucible, saying; "I'm not too sure it's about bowing out in style. I think I've gone past that."

"I'm just hanging on for grim death really. I'm going down the wall slowly with my fingernails," added Davis, who must go through qualifying again next year, as he remains outside the world's top 16. "You have to take it on the chin because it's not nice to go out there and play poorly. But I've gone through the phase where I think I'm bothered now.

"I have mediocre commitment and occasionally I put in mediocre performances, but I can't complain.

"If I try to be 100% committed to the game in any way, shape or form, I'm not absolutely sure I would be anywhere near getting to any standard required to win.

"You can push back the hands of time but this is a generation of players who play a game that's very strong."

Robertson was ruthless and dazzled even Davis with a brilliant break of 125 in the second frame of the afternoon.

Having resumed 7-2 ahead, Robertson reeled off three in a row to book himself a last-16 meeting with Ali Carter.
