Davydenko halts A-Rod in Miami

World number four Nikolay Davydenko recorded his first career victory over American Andy Roddick on Friday to secure a place in the Sony Ericsson Open final against world number two Rafael Nadal.

Davydenko came up with several key breaks of serve and posted a 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 victory after Nadal had earlier remained on course for his first title of the season with a 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 triumph over Tomas Berdych.

"I arrived and I practised every day very well," said 2005 Miami finalist Nadal. "I said at the press conference before the tournament I was playing very well, and right now I am in the final. So anything can happen in the final."

Following his quarter-final triumph over world number one Roger Federer on Thursday, only his second over the Swiss ace in 17 career meetings, Roddick forced a mini-break to go ahead 4-3 in the first set tie-break.

But Davydenko, 26, won the next two points on the American's serve to take a 5-4 lead and after Roddick saved one match point, Davydenko broke again to claim the opening set.

Roddick, the 2004 champion, grabbed a break in the third game of the second set to open up a 2-1 lead, but Davydenko reeled off three breaks of his own to seal the victory in one hour and 47 minutes.

Earlier, Nadal had secured his second final appearance this season, when he lost 6-0 6-1 to Mikhail Youzhny in Chennai in January, after proving too strong for 22-year-old Berdych.

Nadal earned the first break of the match to lead 5-3 but Berdych broke straight back and took the first set to a tie-break. The Spaniard again looked in control at 6-3 but 10th seed Berdych saved three set points before Nadal finally clinched the opening set.

The Majorcan then went from strength to strength in the second set and picked up two breaks of serve to seal his passage to the final.

"The first set was the key of the match, and I lost a couple of points in the end of the set," said Berdych. "He was playing really solid and he took the first set, and then I have to say that I got a little bit tired. If you are not 100% with him, then it's really tough to play."
