Davydenko was questioned by Belgian umpire Jean-Phillipe Derq during the match after the official accused him of not trying hard enough against Cilic.
The ATP responded to the situation by releasing the following statement: "Nikolay Davydenko has been fined US Dollars 2000 for lack of best effort in his match against Marian Cilic."
They have released no further comment, but after the match Davydenko described the umpire's warning as "outrageous".
The top seed made a fine start to the match, claiming the first set for the loss of just one game but served up 10 double-faults in the remaining two sets and eventually went down 1-6 7-5 6-1 to the Croatian.
The official ATP 2007 rulebook lists Davydenko's offence in the following fashion: "A player shall use his best efforts during the match when competing in a tournament. Violation of this section shall subject a player to a fine of up to $10,000 for each violation.
"For purposes of this rule the [tournament] supervisor and/or chair umpire shall have authority to penalise a player in accord with the point penalty schedule.
"In circumstances that are flagrant and particularly injurious to the success of a tournament or a singularly egregious, a single violation of this section shall also constitute the 'Player Major Offence of Aggravated Behaviour'".
After the match, Davydenko said: "I double-faulted to lose a game in the third set and he gave me a warning saying I was trying to lose on purpose. I was simply shocked to hear him say that. This is just outrageous. How does he know what I was trying to do?
"I was so upset with the whole thing I started crying."
