Day fights back

Stephen Hendry and Ryan Day will be back at the crucible on Wednesday after Day took three of the first four frames of the evening session on Tuesday to leave Hendry leading 8-4.

The seven time World Champion had a chance to finish the match in two sessions after holding a 7-1 lead over Day and coming close to recording the second 147 maximum break in two days.

Just hours after Ronnie O'Sullivan's brilliant clearance against Mark Williams, Hendry potted 14 reds and 14 blacks in the fourth frame but missed the final red to end his chances of sharing the £147,000 bonus for a maximum and the £10,000 for the highest break of the tournament.

Day had taken the opening frame with a break of 66 but seven-time champion Hendry won the next seven in a row to take a stranglehold on the match.

On the other table Peter Ebdon and Ali Carter were locked in a war of attrition at 6-6 after splitting the opening session and taking two frames each in the evening.

In the other quarter finals Ronnie O'Sullivan and Liang Wenbo are locked at 4-4 as are Stephen Maguire and Joe Perry.
