De Villiers leads charge

AB De Villiers posted a century and Jacques Kallis was on the verge of a ton of his own as South Africa reached 306 for four at lunch on day two of the second Test against India in Ahmedabad.

After resuming on 223 overnight, the fifth-wicket partners put in a faultless shift at the crease to extend their partnership to 189 runs and the tourists' lead to 230.

De Villiers completed his fifth Test century in 174 balls on his way to 102 at the interval, while Kallis' more pedestrian 97 from 223 balls left the 32-year-old on the brink of his 30th Test ton.

The partnership saw the tourists run away from India, who managed just 76 runs in their first innings as a Dale Steyn-inspired Proteas attack ripped through the tourists on day one.

Kallis required a degree of luck to keep his wicket intact, twice surviving scares that on another day might have seen him walking back to the pavilion.

He first rode his luck when he pushed Harbhajan Singh's delivery lightly into the stumps but the bails stayed in place, while he was also hit square on the pad in front of middle wicket by Shanthakumaran Sreesanth but the umpire dismissed the India appeals.
