Dean loses fitness battle

Britain's Hatti Dean has withdrawn from the Olympics after failing to recover sufficiently from an ankle injury to compete in the 3,000 metres steeplechase.

The 26-year-old, born in Oxford but now based in Sheffield, said: "It is very disappointing. I feel like I am fit but the ankle is unable to handle running quite yet.

"I don't think I'll be ready to race on the track again this year. I will just have to focus upon the cross country season this winter."

Helen Clitheroe and Barbara Parker will compete for Britain in the steeplechase in Friday's heats. There was no nominated reserve.
