Disappointment for Bangladesh

Bangladesh were 137 all out as New Zealand reached tea 17 for one in reply on the opening day of the first Test at Dunedin.

After reaching lunch 88 for four the tourists collapsed after the break to leave the hosts trailing by just 120 runs.

Despite that, New Zealand hadn't made the start they would have liked to their first innings as Cumming was dismissed lbw in the third over having picked up just one run.

After winning the toss, New Zealand chose to put Bangladesh into bat first as they looked to exploit the conditions of the Dunedin pitch, which had come under some criticism in the build up to the Test.

And the decision to bowl first appeared to pay off as Bangladesh had lost their first wicket by the third over. Junaid Siddique was out for one when he hit from a Chris Martin delivery into the hands of Stephen Fleming at first slip.

Habibul Bashar fared a little better at the crease as his big hitting ensured he racked up 23 runs before he was caught out by Brendon McCullum with the tourists 43 for two. Martin completed his hat-trick of wickets when Mohammad Ashraful was dismissed lbw soon after.

Tamim Iqbal and Shahriar Nafees steadied the ship somewhat to forge a 35-run partnership before the latter got a thick inside edge and the ball rolled onto the stumps.

Iqbal passed the half-century mark after lunch but what was to follow would have caused little cheer as Bangladesh suffered a dramatic collapse. Peter Fulton caught out Iqbal at second slip from Martin's delivery before Mashrafe Mortaza followed suit soon after when he was bowled out by Jacob Oram with Bangladesh floundering on 100 for six.

Shahadat Hossain lasted just one ball before he was dismissed after getting an outside edge to McCullum.

Mushfiqur Rahim provided a resistance that lasted over an hour before Kyle Mills' delivery was sliced to Bell at gully. And Sajidul Islam completed Bangladesh's misery soon after when he was dismissed from a Mills delivery.
