Dispute threatens England matches

England's final three matches of their one-day series in the Caribbean could be threatened by a cash dispute between West Indies' players and their cricket board.

Domestic players in the West Indies went on strike on Friday and refused to play in the three scheduled matches in the West Indies Cricket Board's regional four-day competition in protest at money that is allegedly owed to the players.

Friday's strike followed the resignation of Dinanath Ramnarine, who heads the players' association, as a director of the WICB while the West Indies players have also shown their solidarity.

None of the players attended a promotional event by Digicel, the team sponsor, earlier this week while they all put tape on the left arm of their shirts to block out the company's logo during Friday's one-day international at the Providence Stadium.

A further meeting is planned for Tuesday and, if the dispute is not resolved, the remaining three matches in the one-day series - in Barbados on March 27 and 29 and St Lucia on April 3 - could be under threat.

"I want to make clear that what happened with the tape is nothing to do with Digicel," explained West Indies captain Chris Gayle. "The players have no argument with Digicel but we wanted to send a statement.

"We support them (the players) in whatever stance they take. The union represent us so we have to stand by them."

Asked if the West Indies players could also take strike action, which could potentially disrupt the final three matches of the series, Gayle would only reply: "There are talks going on."

England captain Andrew Strauss refused to become involved in the dispute, adding: "I don't know the fine print of that and it would be wrong for me to comment on that, really."
