French second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was too good for Argentinian Agustin Calleri, winning their first-round encounter 6-2 7-5.

Australian qualifier Joseph Sirianni won the first set against experienced Frenchman Michael Llodra, but ran out of steam after losing the second-set tie-break and eventually went down 5-7 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.

Also in the first round, Japan's Kei Nishikori saw off American qualifier Bobby Reynolds 6-3 6-2.

In the second round, Robin Soderling of Sweden advanced with a comfortable 6-3 6-3 victory over France's Julien Benneteau, while seventh-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet overcame American Taylor Dent 7-5 6-4.
