Donald ducks out

Allan Donald has turned down the role as England bowling coach after informing the England and Wales Cricket Board he does not wish to take part in any forthcoming tours because of family reasons.

The South African was originally employed on a five-week contract in May which was then extended by the ECB to take in the ICC World Twenty20 which finished earlier this week in South Africa.

He was offered the full-time role in July but has now told the ECB: "I am grateful to the ECB for the chance to work with the England team and a backroom staff that is one of the best in world cricket. It has been an immensely enjoyable time but after 11 years on the road I feel that the commitment I would have to make to touring would be too great."

He added: "I wish (England coach) Peter Moores, the England team and management every success in the future and I am grateful for the experience of the last five months."

The 40-year-old was appointed to work alongside Kevin Shine and was involved in the final two Tests in the triumphant series against West Indies as well as the series defeat by India.

However, his influence seemed more profound on the one-day stage as England ended the summer with a fine NatWest Series win over a formidable Indian side.

Durham's Ottis Gibson has been chosen to fill in for the former Worcestershire player on the tour of Sri Lanka.

David Collier, the ECB chief executive, thanked Donald for his efforts since linking up with the side.

He said: "We are grateful to Allan for his contribution this summer and we fully understand the reasons for his decision not to take up the offer of a full-time contract which we offered before the Trent Bridge Test (against India) in July."
