Doubts increase over Harmison fitness

England fast bowler Steve Harmison is "extremely doubtful" for the first npower Test against India next week due to a recurrence of his hernia problem.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney gave the assessment after the 28-year-old had been examined by the England medical team.

"He will have it reassessed on Monday," confirmed Graveney. "At this stage he would have to be considered extremely doubtful for the first Test. He is not ruled out."

Harmison will play no further part in Durham's current LV County Championship match against Sussex at Horsham after reporting soreness following a five-over spell.

The injury first struck during the final match of the 3-0 npower series win over West Indies at the Riverside.

However, Harmison hoped to battle through until the end of England's Test commitments this summer before undergoing surgery.

"It's too early to say whether he will play at Lord's," said Durham director of cricket Geoff Cook, earlier on Saturday.

"He may have to have the operation earlier than scheduled."

Harmison has missed only four of England's previous 46 matches, all four in a row after injuring his shin prior to the final Test against India in Mumbai last year.

Lancashire's James Anderson replaced him for that stunning series-levelling victory and will almost certainly be included in a squad of 13 with the selectors also likely to pick another fast bowler as back-up.
