Dougherty in good Nick

Nick Dougherty overcame early adversity to grab a share of second place but Sergio Garcia might give second thought to coming back to Oakmont for the second round of the US Open.

Dougherty bounced back from consecutive bogeys on the front nine to improve to one under par through 13 holes.

That gave the Englishman a share of second place behind American David Toms, who was three under with seven to play.

Playing in just his third US Open, the 25-year-old Dougherty birdied the sixth before trouble struck.

He bogeyed the seventh and eighth and made the turn at one over. After a par at 10, Dougherty birdied 11 and then the 13th to get into red numbers.

Jose Maria Olazabal and Pablo Martin were both tied with Dougherty at one under but playing partner Garcia, completing an all-Spanish group, was having a dreadful day.

Garcia started with consecutive pars but that was the highlight of his day.

A double bogey at the third started his woes and Garcia closed his front nine with three bogeys in a row before another double at the ninth.

The back nine was not much better as Garcia sandwiched a bogey at 11 between pars.

Former Open champion Ben Curtis, defending champion Geoff Ogilvy, Dane Anders Hansen and Sweden Peter Hanson were all level par.

But chasing his third US Open title, Tiger Woods bogeyed three of his last five holes to lie two over after 12.
