Downing hails Capello

And the Middlesbrough player is backing Capello's stance of picking players on current form rather than past reputations as he strives to cement his place on the left side of midfield.
"I think I've had more chances with Fabio. It's been a fresh start. He has given me confidence and Germany was my best performance for England," said Downing.
"But it was only one and I want to keep it going. I hope I can carry it on and play in the World Cup qualifiers as well. I don't just want to be in the squad. I want to play."
Downing has often flattered to deceive when playing for his country but felt he had his best game in an England shirt when a side lacking eight first team regulars won 2-1 against Germany in Berlin last Wednesday.
It was in contrast to his previous start when he was taken off at half-time in the World Cup qualifier against Andorra in Barcelona in early September.
He added: "I feel under Fabio it is not all about names, it is about performances and basically, if you are not playing well for your club, you won't be picked.
"We have to do the business week in and week out and, if you are not doing that, there is always someone else to take your place. You have to be on your toes every week which is good."
Downing added: "I think the left-sided position with England is wide open. Joe (Cole) has been missing through injury but he is a quality player while Ashley Young has come in and done quite well. There is myself and Steven Gerrard has also played out there.
"I am hoping the manager keeps giving me my chance and I can show I am worth a place on the left but I am sure all the other lads think that as well."
