Dravid resigns as India skipper

Rahul Dravid resigned as India captain on Friday, citing a need to concentrate on his batting.

The 34-year-old wrote to the Board of Control for Cricket in India asking to be relieved of his duties before the forthcoming visit of Australia for a seven-match one-day international series, which gets under way on September 29.

Dravid was quoted on CNN-IBN as saying: "I want to step down before the Australia series. I want to concentrate on my own game. I would still give full co-operation to the team as a senior player and batsman."

A statement from Niranjan Shah, secretary of the Indian board, read: "He (Dravid) expressed his desire to step down as captain of the Indian team and requested that he should not be considered for the job for the ensuing Australia series."

BCCI president Sharad Pawar said: "He would like to concentrate on batting. He feels after leading the team for two years, he should give an opportunity to a new person. He would like to play as a batsman only.

"The selection committee will meet and select a new captain. He discussed the issue with me and I think we should respect his wishes."

Dravid has captained India in 25 Tests and 79 ODIs. He took over the captaincy from Sourav Ganguly in October 2005.

Kiran More, the former chairman of the Indian selection panel, was disappointed at the news and questioned the reasons behind it.

He told CNN-IBN: "This cannot be an overnight decision, we have to go deeper into the matter and find out what the reasons are behind it. It is very important to know the reasons for the future of Indian cricket."

Indian manager Chandu Borde said: "I can't say who will succeed Dravid. His decision comes as a surprise and it was unexpected. He did well on the tour of England and was involved in all team meetings."
