Draw on cards in Mohali

England remained on course to salvage a draw from the weather-hit final Test today after they were set an unlikely victory target of 403 on the final day.

The tourists reached 31 for one at tea with a minimum of 31 overs remaining to survive if they are to prevent India claiming the victory which would secure a 2-0 success in the series.

Opener Alastair Cook was their only casualty when he edged seamer Ishant Sharma to VVS Laxman at second slip for 10, but England otherwise progressed to the safety of tea without further alarm.

India had earlier resumed the final morning at the PCA Stadium 285 runs ahead on 134 for four, and captain MS Dhoni finally called a halt to the innings when opener Gautam Gambhir fell three runs short of claiming his second century in the match.

Gambhir fell in the 10th over after lunch, clipping off-spinner Graeme Swann to backward point to signal the declaration on 251 for seven.

Gambhir shared a 153-run partnership with Yuvraj Singh, who made a superb 86 before he was run out by Ian Bell.
