Duo help Pakistan avoid follow-on

Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Sami batted through the first session on the fourth day of the second Test against India as Pakistan avoided the follow-on and reached 418 for six at lunch.

Misbah remained unbeaten on 141 while Sami moved onto 24 as the pair added 61 runs as Pakistan moved to within 198 runs of India's mammoth first innings score after the tourists began the day 358 for six.

Right-hander Misbah began steadily as he looked to guide Pakistan past the follow on as the tourists looked to respond on India's 616 for five declared in the first innings.

Misbah suddenly burst into life and lofted Harbhajan Singh straight down the ground for six in the morning's fifth over.

A run of maidens and periods of low-scoring were ended as Misbah pushed Pakistan closer to 417 when he cut Anil Kumble past point just before drinks and then broke a sequence of three maidens with an elegant clip through midwicket.

With 20 minutes to lunch, Sami poked his first boundary past slips to bring up the 50 partnership before launching Kumble over midwicket for six.

Sami survived a scare in the eighth over of the morning play while on seven as Rahul Dravid failed to hold an edge after the Pakistan seamer attempted to drive Kumble.

Billy Doctrove turned down several bat-pad and leg-before appeals before he was replaced by Amiesh Saheba after feeling ill at drinks.

Zaheer Khan threatened to find a breakthrough, but Misbah took Pakistan past the follow-on three overs from lunch.
