Duo resist England charge

India produced a spirited rearguard action to halt England's charge towards victory as they reached lunch at 207 for five on the final day - 172 runs behind.

The hosts had made the perfect start, with Ryan Sidebottom trapping Sourav Ganguly (40) leg before and James Anderson getting Dinesh Karthik (60) to edge to Paul Collingwood at slip.

But VVS Laxman (29 not out) and Mahendra Dhoni (28no) added a crucial 61.

The tourists, having resumed on 137 for three needing a further 242 runs to complete an unlikely victory, lost former captain Sourav Ganguly in the fourth over of the day when he had added only four runs to his overnight 36.

Opener Karthik followed four overs later after battling for over three hours at the crease, driving loosely at an Anderson outswinger.

After reducing India to 145 for five, however, England were unable to break their resistance, with Laxman and Dhoni - both dismissed cheaply in the first innings - forging a useful sixth-wicket stand.
