The reigning champions recorded their first win of the season at home to Hampshire last week and a five-wicket haul from Harmison today ensured they jumped above Lancashire into second place in the Division One table with a 138-run win.
Lancashire, chasing 274 for victory, were bowled out for just 135 inside two sessions. Harmison returned figures of five for 44 and, if he is to make an late push for an Ashes role this summer, he is doing his hopes no harm after also taking four wickets in the first innings.
Leaders Nottinghamshire were taking a firmer grip of their game against Hampshire after they lost only the wicket of Adam Voges (49) in the afternoon session.
Nottinghamshire had lost four wickets in the morning session, with James Tomlinson grabbing three of those, but Voges and veteran Ali Brown steadied the ship with a 110-run stand for the fifth wicket.
Brown remained unbeaten on 82 with Chris Read (30no) joining him to help Nottinghamshire to 211 for five, and a lead of 242 runs.
Meanwhile, a half-century from Yorkshire debutant Jonathan Bairstow helped resuscitate their second innings against Somerset at Headingley.
The 19-year-old right-hander belied his youth to remain unbeaten on 82 as wickets fell around him. Yorkshire were eventually bowled out for 248, but only after a 55-run stand for the last wicket between Bairstow and David Wainwright had delayed the tea break.
Worcestershire were 48 for one as they attempted to reduced their mammoth first-innings deficit of 332 against Sussex.
And in Division Two, Northamptonshire were staring down the barrel of defeat as they slipped to 112 for four, still needing 209 to make Surrey bat again, while Glamorgan all-rounder Jamie Dalrymple continued his good day with two wickets as Derbyshire reached tea at 79 for three.
