Durham victory push delayed

English cricket's newest county, who only played their maiden match as a first class county in 1992, were on course to complete an emphatic triumph over favourites Hampshire to lift silverware in their maiden appearance in a Lord's final.
But having reduced Hampshire's star-studded line-up to 158 for five after 32.2 overs chasing a record total of 312 for five, the forecast rain finally arrived and ended play with Durham's sights firmly set on lifting the silver trophy.
In any other form of one-day cricket anywhere else in the world it was a situation that would be regarded as a full match with each side having batted for at least 20 overs.
But under England and Wales Cricket Board regulations the two teams have to return and finish it off on Sunday morning.
Instead of celebrating in front of 8,000 Durham fans who had travelled down from the north-east for the occasion, the victory celebrations were likely to be played out in front of a smattering of spectators who had stayed down in London.
