Early starters make progress

Despite expectations that the course would again bare its teeth, the early groups found there were birdies to be made in the final round of the US Open today.

American Anthony Kim, Kenneth Ferrie, Lee Westwood, Jose Maria Olazabal and 2003 British Open champion Ben Curtis all found early success at Oakmont.

Kim birdied the fifth and seventh to improve to 15 over, while Westwood birdied the second and fifth to lie 14 over. Olazabal, Curtis and Ferrie all carded birdies at the third but were still a long way behind leader Aaron Baddeley, who was due to tee off alongside Tiger Woods at 8pm.

Australian Baddeley rebounded from consecutive bogeys on the 15th and 16th on Saturday to birdie the last for a two-shot lead on two over par.

England's Paul Casey and Justin Rose were both three off the lead on five over as they sought to become the first European winner of the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970.
