Early starters struggle in rain

Miserable weather greeted the early starters in the final round of the Open Championship at Carnoustie today.

Wind and rain made scoring more difficult than ever, with only one player - England's Jon Bevan - so far able to match par on the front nine.

Luke Donald dropped five shots in the first seven holes to slump to 11 over par while playing partner Sandy Lyle had a double bogey on the second and triple bogey eight on the sixth to be out in 42.

Scotland's Alastair Forsyth, joint seventh after two rounds, had also taken 42 to the turn and a bogey on the 11th dropped him back to 13 over par.

Spain's Sergio Garcia leads by three shots on nine under par, the Ryder Cup star due out at 2.20pm alongside his nearest challenger, Steve Stricker.

Stricker carded the lowest ever round in an Open at Carnoustie with a superb 64 yesterday, which also equalled the course record held by Alan Tait and Colin Montgomerie.

Seven players share third place on three under par, including Ireland's Paul McGinley and Padraig Harrington, England's Paul Broadhurst and 2002 champion Ernie Els.

Els drove out of bounds to run up a triple bogey eight in the third round, but played the back nine in just 31 to card a 68.

Tiger Woods, seeking a third straight Open victory and 13th major, is eight shots off the pace on one under.
