Ebanks-Blake penalty sees spoils shared

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scored his first goal of the season to rescue a well-deserved point for Wolves in a 1-1 draw that dealt a blow to Aston Villa's European hopes.

Gabriel Agbonlahor maintained his hot scoring streak by scoring for the sixth time in eight games to put Villa ahead with 10 minutes remaining.

But three minutes later Ebanks-Blake netted from the penalty spot after Steve Sidwell had brought down Michael Kightly.

Agbonlahor should have put the visitors ahead inside the first 90 seconds, firing a week effort tamely at Wayne Hennessey.

The hosts retaliated and appeared to have strong claims for a penalty rejected by referee Peter Walton when central defender Richard Dunne held back Kevin Doyle as he looked to burst clear.

Wolves were not overawed by their high-flying opponents and Christophe Berra was only just off target with a glancing header from Karl Henry's angled ball.

James Milner came to Villa's rescue when he cleared a goal-bound effort which hit the shoulder of Doyle from an inswinging Kightly corner.

Ebanks-Blake hooked the ball over from close range following yet another Kightly centre before he headed Kightly`s free-kick wide.

Martin O'Neill's men looked more purposeful after the break and a mistake by David Edwards allowed Stiliyan Petrov to release Ashley Young but he curled his shot wide of Hennessey's left-hand post.

Hennessey parried over a shot from a narrow angle by Agbonlahor before the striker broke the deadlock but Ebanks-Blake held his nerve to rescue his side.
