ECB chief backs EPL idea

England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke believes a Twenty20 tournament similar to the Indian Premier League in this country would be "robust, spectator-friendly and economically sustainable".

The Daily Telegraph has reported that Texan billionaire Allen Stanford, who has ploughed cash into a similar project in the West Indies, will meet ECB representatives on Tuesday.

Clarke said: "We don't want a knee-jerk reaction to the IPL, but we believe that we can set up a robust, spectator-friendly, economically sustainable competition of our own which will not cut across the core revenue streams of Test and one-day international cricket."

IPL chairman Lalit Modi - whose much-hyped competition begins this week - has reportedly indicated he may be interested in a partnership of some sort between the two competitions.
