Enckelman out to turn shame to fame

Cardiff goalkeeper Peter Enckelman hopes an FA Cup semi-final victory over Barnsley on Sunday will help eclipse the memory of his infamous gaffe in the Birmingham derby.

The Finn could not have chosen a worse game to make the most high-profile mistake of his career. Somehow, he allowed Olof Mellberg's throw-in to roll under his foot and into the Aston Villa goal in a fiercely-contested clash with Birmingham in September 2002.

"It's still on YouTube now. You can watch it!" Enckelman joked. "It was just one of those things. I will probably have that tag on me for the rest of my life."

He added: "It doesn't bother me. I can laugh about it; I can joke about it. I even bring it up myself sometimes.

"Some still recognise me; some might say something. If I went back to Birmingham, I'm sure I'd get a lot of stick."

Sunday's game will be the Bluebirds' first FA Cup semi-final since 1927 - the year they went on to win the competition - and Enckelman reckons his team have a fantastic chance to make their own piece of history.

"It gives everyone the opportunity to get noticed and make history - especially in the history of Cardiff, for the fans, for everyone involved on Sunday," he added.

"They will be remembered that they were with the team that got to the final of the Cup for the first time in 81 years. That's the aim.

"We're not going there just for the occasion. We're playing Barnsley - both teams are in the (Coca-Cola) Championship; both teams have got an equal chance of winning the game.

"We've got to make sure that we do our utmost, that we're at our best and play our own game."
