Buxton dislocated his right thumb in Gloucester's Guinness Premiership final defeat to Leicester, and on Monday night had it "repositioned".

Initial indications after the match were that Buxton had no chance of making Wednesday's flight - but England, already short on options, are prepared to give the 28-year-old every chance to prove his fitness.

England head coach Brian Ashton will not select players from Leicester and Wasps, who meet in the Heineken Cup final on Sunday, or European Challenge Cup finalists Bath.

So if Buxton is out, Ashton is likely to scour the England Saxons Churchill Cup squad for a potential replacement, with Kieran Roche (London Irish), Ben Skirving (Saracens) and Ben Woods (Newcastle) among the possible alternatives.
