England claim key wickets

England claimed two key wickets to halt a threatening opening partnership by India in the fifth match of the NatWest Series at Headingley.

Having won the toss for the first time in the series, England captain Paul Collingwood chose to bowl but watched India's openers Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar forge a 116-run partnership off only 118 balls.

But just as India, needing victory to prevent England winning the series, seemed set to continue their onslaught they lost two wickets in a seven-over spell to check their progress and leave the tourists on 164 for two after 30 overs.

Denied the services of Andrew Flintoff after he suffered a recurrence of an ankle problem, England instead chose Gloucestershire seamer Jon Lewis and pinned down India for the first five overs by restricting them to just seven runs.

The sixth over of the innings sparked a change in fortunes with Tendulkar hitting four boundaries in five balls to spark a boundary spree.

England's only chance of an early breakthrough came in the 11th over with Tendulkar edging Collingwood behind on 33 but wicketkeeper Matt Prior was unable to claim the thick edge.

It was a costly error with Tendulkar going on to hit 71 off 59 balls, including 13 fours, before finally edging behind off Lewis in the 20th over.

Seven overs later Ganguly followed him back to the pavilion after hitting 59 off 79 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes, when he holed out to Monty Panesar's fifth ball by picking out Alastair Cook in the deep.
