England forced to bat

New Zealand claimed the early advantage in the second Test today with captain Daniel Vettori winning the toss and deciding to bowl in favourable conditions against England.

Cloudy overhead conditions ensured both sides would have bowled first given the choice but for the second successive Test, Vettori called correctly and gave his seamers a chance to exploit the conditions.

New Zealand had already reluctantly changed their winning line-up from the opening Test in Hamilton having looked at the Basin Reserve wicket and decided it was better suited to an extra seamer.

They drafted Mark Gillespie, who was in the squad for the first Test but not selected for the starting line-up, into the side ahead of off-spinner Jeetan Patel.

England sprang a surprise yesterday by dropping Ashes heroes Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison following their disappointing performances during the dismal 189-run in Hamilton.

The pair, who boast 456 victims from 123 Test appearances between them, were told the news following yesterday's net session in Wellington.

They were replaced by Stuart Broad - whose only previous Test appearance was against Sri Lanka at Colombo before Christmas - and Jimmy Anderson, who took two for 95 from 38 overs playing New Zealand domestic cricket for Auckland last week.
