Michael Vaughan's team lost their final six wickets for just 26 runs as they were shot out for 298 on a second day which did not begin until the afternoon session due to torrential rain.
Having been 218 for one on Thursday it was a huge turnaround in the match situation but James Anderson struck two significant blows as India closed on 145 for four.
Lancashire paceman Anderson produced two fine deliveries to remove Indian stellar duo Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.
Ryan Sidebottom made the first incision into the Indian batting when he trapped Dinesh Karthik leg before.
Anderson then produced an outswinger to take Dravid's outside edge and claimed the prize scalp of Tendulkar, who became the third-highest scorer in Test history during his 37, with one which shaped back in to win an lbw appeal.
Opener Wasim Jaffer hit a half-century, however, before debutant Chris Tremlett's extra bounce earnt a fourth wicket shortly before the close via a caught and bowled.
