England hopeful over Strauss

England are hopeful captain Andrew Strauss will recover from a slight hamstring strain to lead the side in Friday's opening match of the one-day international series against West Indies.

The Middlesex left-hander suffered the problem during Sunday's emphatic six-wicket Twenty20 International defeat in Trinidad and was prevented from taking a full part in England's fitness training on Tuesday morning.

But after being scanned using ultra-sound, which revealed no significant damage, the tourists remain hopeful he will recover in time to lead the side out for the start of the five-match series at the Providence Stadium.

Strauss will continue to be monitored over the next few days, but is not believed to have suffered anything like as serious an injury as West Indies captain Chris Gayle, who suffered a grade one tear of his hamstring during the final Test.

Gayle has been sidelined for over a week but is expected to return for Friday's opener, and Strauss remains confident he will have recovered to pit his wits against him as England search for their first international victory of the winter.
