England in command

West Indies contributed to their own downfall as England's huge total in the NatWest Series contest at Edgbaston was made to look more daunting.

Captain Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan were both caught attempting attacking strokes inside the first four overs while Runako Morton perished to a needless run out.

Tim Bresnan was then awarded a borderline lbw decision to quell Dwayne Bravo's counter-attack and, set an unlikely 329 for victory after England registered their third-highest score in 50-over cricket - the West Indies were 100 for four in the 23rd over.

Left-hander Gayle mishit a pull to mid-on off Stuart Broad and Sarwan succumbed to a brilliant, reaction catch from England captain Andrew Strauss, whose outstretched left hand intercepted a drive off James Anderson at cover.

It needed something special from one of the West Indies' big three and although Gayle and Sarwan began with early boundaries, it left Shivnarine Chanderpaul to negotiate the steep chase.

A rain shower fell between the two early dismissals and another one drove the players from the field shortly after 4pm.

Shortly after the resumption, Morton's ambitious thoughts of two, after driving a ball from Bresnan to deep cover, proved fatal as Paul Collingwood's throw narrowly beat his attempts to get back to the non-striker's end.

Earlier, Matt Prior's 87, his highest score in a one-day international, and 75 from Owais Shah helped England to their highest score against West Indies in limited-overs matches.
