England lose early wicket

England's hopes of building on their promising start to the final Test were undermined by the loss of Ian Bell to the fourth ball of the second day at the Brit Oval.

Having dismissed South Africa for a lowly 194 after losing the toss on Thursday, England resumed on 49 for one with high hopes of setting a platform for a major total.

But having added just two runs to his overnight 22, Warwickshire batsman Bell fell in the first over to give renewed hope to the tourists and bring new captain Kevin Pietersen to the crease.

Bell had been promoted to his favoured number three position under the new regime and looked comfortable at the crease the previous evening following the early loss of opener Andrew Strauss.

However, he failed to take his opportunity this morning, with seamer Makhaya Ntini tempting him into pushing outside off-stump and edging low to Proteas captain Graeme Smith at first slip.
